The Puyallup School District Case was a monumental case that started with a concerned mother and one very young and fearless attorney, Thad Martin.
I did not know the full extent of the discrimination that children had faced for years in the District. All I knew was that something needed to be changed because my children were being called racial names and being treated in a racial manner by students and staff.
No one thought much of the case when I first started talking to different attorneys in town about my concerns, but when I talked to Thad, he knew that the case would have impact not just in our community, but in the whole Country. What Thad did in the case was truly remarkable and even beyond the call of any attorney. I know that he worked night and day on the case. He walked with our children at the school when they received racial death threats. He got the word out in the community about the case and soon the case went from just my family to over 50 people who had also been discriminated against.
Besides obtaining one of the largest race discrimination settlements in the Country, we were able to get real change and injunctive relief in place at the School District so that other children would not go through what my children went through.
